If you’re a Paraprofessional you’ve either heard of the ParaPro Assessment or have already taken it yourself. As a Paraprofessional, you may be required to take the ParaPro Assessment. Completing the ParaPro Assessment isn’t always required but it is required by some school districts and it will help you succeed as a Paraprofessional. What is the ParaPro Assessment?

So, what is the ParaPro Assessment? It’s a comprehensive exam for paraprofessionals and allows schools to assess a candidates’ proficiency. The exam is designed to measure knowledge in multiple subjects and skills. The ParaPro Assessment is required in some states or school districts but not all. This assessment was introduced as a response to the No Child Left Behind Act.

What is a Paraprofessional?

Paraprofessionals are considered the backbone of the classroom. They’re also known as teacher aides, paras, and paraeducators. Paras provide support to the certified teacher of the classroom and can be placed in special education or general education settings. They provide instructional, emotional, and behavioral support to students in and out of the classroom. Paras help out hands-on by working with children in small groups, one to one, assisting with supervision of students, and other administrative tasks. Paraprofessionals are found in anywhere from high schools to elementary schools. 

What does the ParaPro Assessment cover?

The ParaPro Assessment covers multiple subjects such as math, reading, writing and the ability to assist students with the same skills. The test takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete 90 multiple-choice questions. Two-thirds of this test covers basic skills and knowledge. The other third mainly focuses on applying these skills in the classroom.

How can I take the ParaPro Assessment?

The ParaPro Assessment can be completed at a testing center or online. The test is computer delivered regardless if you choose to take it at home or at a testing center. In order to take the test at home, you must have a computer with a working camera and the ability to install a lightweight app. While taking the test there will be a Prometric proctor overseeing the examination process remotely. If you’re in New Jersey and would like to take the test in person, there are multiple testing locations. You can take the ParaPro Assessment in New Jersey at the following locations:

  • Hunterdon County Educational Services Commission
  • Lakewood Public Schools
  • Brookdale Community College
  • Rutherford-Lyndhurst School District
    • Two locations: Lyndhurst or Rutherford
  • Rowan College at Burlington County
    • Two locations: Mount Laurel or Pemberton
  • Ocean County College
  • Chrome Institute
